Details:

It seems to be a trend now that more and more people are going shoe-less indoors, and asking their guests to do the same when visiting. It does significantly reduce the amount of dirt and germs inside the house, particularly if there is carpeting.

There seems to be opposing opinions on this issue, with more from the West Coast eagerly taking them off while some East Coast traditionalists find it offensive to be requested to remove their shoes when visiting someone.

Where do you stand?

"I'm normally barefoot when I'm indoors but I don't require visitors to do the same"

I'm on the east coast, in Florida. I suspect what you're noticing is in part influenced by Japanese tradition, so it makes sense that it would be more prevalent on the west coast. I think it's pretty smart not to track dirt into your house by taking your shoes off as you enter, but it's not something that most Americans practice, so it's not something that I demand from my guests. But I would be very pleased if this practice spread and became more commonplace.

No, all my family's shoes are outside on the front porch. Not sure why, probably because I come from an asian family? Also, you can't beat socks for indoor comfort.

"I take off my outside shoes as soon as I come in the door of our house and put on slippers."

I would never ever ask guests to do that though because to me it seems rude. I do often take my shoes off when I visit someone else but I do it on my own and have never been asked to take my shoes off.

"I take my shoes off the moment I get in my house simply for comfort, always have."

However, I would never ask a guest to do so. I don’t think it should be imposed on guests, just ask them to give their feet an extra wipe on the mat if you have new carpet.

Atlanta.

Hardwood floors.

We sweep once in a while and all is fine

I find it very hard to remove boots all the time and i wear them a lot.

I can not imagine having to take them off each time i came inside for a break, bathroom, or drink.
