Details:

I'm taking my puppy to a PETSmart type place to have her groomed tomorrow so she can start to get used to the process. She's a very furry babe (Maltese x Shih Tzu) and so she'll have a lifetime of beauty treatments ahead of her, I'm sure. Besides which, I'm scared to trim her nails *yes, I know, I'm a coward*.

Do you tip these people or are they salaried by the pet store? Thanks!

"I treat it this way. My hairdresser gets a salary but I tip her. My groomer gets a salary but I tip her too."

I just assume that anyone providing me with a service (groomers, hairdressers, waiters/waitresses etc) doesn't make a whole lot of money on a small base salary and therefore relies on tips to make a decent living.  When someone does a really good job of providing that service I tip 20%.  As for nail trimming it's not about being a coward Cornflake Girl, you made a good decision.  If you make a mistake in the trimming you'll not only hurt her, but you just might get bit.  It's a job best left to the professionals.  I have a Doberman and those of you with Dobes know that their nails grow like grass.  You can bring her back to the groomer just to have her nails done.  It doesn't have to be the whole wash and dry business.

I personally think you should tip. And tip based on what you want done, meaning how picky you are going to be, and based on how bad the coat is. If you never brush your dog and then expect the groomer to do miracles then you should tip well. Puppies need to be started very early with grooming and taken back often. The more they go the easier and less stressful it is for them and the groomer. If you take her often and keep her coat clean and combed then you should tip a couple of bucks. It’s not really the money it’s more of an extra thank you. If you prefer you could always wait until you have been going for awhile and gotten to know the staff some and bring in baked goods. Everyone loves food as a thank you.

If you have kind of been a slacker when it comes to combing and brushing. And the two of you like to play in the mud. Then you need to tip a little better, because it is like you are asking them to do your job for you. Yes you are paying them but it is your job to upkeep your dogs coat in between grooming.

It all depends on the job they did, when your girl comes out all beautiful and you have an eyeful of happy puppy that is in great spirits from this event,(I assume first time) and she had a good experience then tip your groomers well becuase they deserve it for a job well done!

Your girl must have a positive attitude, not scared this is important because this will effect the many times thereafter. A negative experience scares her and at this point will be a nightmare for both of you in the future!

You don't have to make the groomers rich from tips, if they do a great job $5 - $10 should do it, about like what I tipped for my collie when he was alive!

Are you sure they are salary or hourly if they make only minimum wage, or is this a private business? Again here play it by sight and ear using your girl as reference, if she is happy and looks good then you are happy, nothing less than $5 and no more than $10!

I know about dog grooming my collie was everything! Our groomers did a fantastic job, this was takin just after his monthly visit and our daily walk!

I would normally say they charge enough just to wash and blow-dry, but then I only go in extreme circumstances of "kids covering greyhound in something sticky!" You have a very fluffy pooch with a future of hair care ahead of her. Use the same girl if possible, tip big, (regardless of how much she gets paid), and always compliment her work. Rest assured you will have the most pampered pooch in the parlour! Her fur will be silky smooth, her nails never trimmed too far back and she will be GENTLY washed and the blow dry will never be too hot for her. Trust me, money talks loudly. If you ever get a discount, always pass it on to the girl, remember her birthday and xmas (from her client, of course) and if there is ever something you aren`t happy with then ask politely, "did you notice this?" The question in your mind may be "What the hell have you done to my baby!?" but NEVER say that. Your pet is in their hands! After all, if you want a chef to cook your steak to perfection, you don`t critisize his entree! lol

You suggest baked good as a tip> WHAT WORLD DO YOU LIVE IN? Food is not accepted by many places for all sorts of safety issues. If they do a good job TIP THEM! If you can afford to have your pet groomed just figure the tip in as part of the upkeep expense. Anyone who has ever worked where they accept tips will understand Baked Goods are more of an insult. Give them 10% even if ithey didn't do the greatest of jobs... 20% will make sure your next visit is even a better one than the first!
