A pound of flour is just about one quart when sifted.  Compacted, it may take up as little as 1.5 pints (3/4 of a quart).

You should be able to fit a five pound sack of flour into a five quart container.  However, flour can fluff up considerably when you transfer it to the bag, and if you try to stuff it into exactly five quarts it may slop over the edges.

Either way, you can't reliably fit it into a four-quart (one gallon) container.  So, you might want to get a 6 quart container (1.5 gallons).

5 1/2 quarts should also be big enough. (But $19 for a flour cannister!)

Pumpkin pie mix is a bit stringy, What did I do wrong?
What I did as a experiment with the first one was to try cooking it on the stove.
I cooked the pumpkins in the oven (I scraped all the seeds and such out first).
Then I cleaned the meat out of the pumpkins and followed a pumpkin pie recipe (the one pam sent a link for). I used a kitchen aid to mix / mash it.
Then instead of baking it in a pie crust, I cooked it in a sauce pan on the stove.
It tastes good. The overall consistancy is pretty good, , however it is a bit stringy, it is soft and easy to eat, but just not quite "normal" with the stringy texture.

What did I screw up? Do I need to cook the mix longer? Mix / mash it more? Or cook the pumpkins more before I mash them?

Thanks!!!

When you are cooking, do you become someone else?
For me cooking consists of so many emotions. Sounds strange I know but I learned to cook so early on by my grandmother and my mother. I was making meals for my parents at 9years old on my own. They didn't get home until 8pm sometimes so I did the cleaning and cooking.

Now, 32 years later, when I cook the rest of the world disappears. I turn the music on, put my apron on (sometimes) and begin. I like using creativity in my cooking and doing new things. I like when people help but I would much rather be in the kitchen alone. There has only been one man I loved cooking with and that was the greatest thing to share with someone else. I can easily cook with my Mom because we have fun and the memories come back but anyone else I am booting them out of the kitchen area! I don't usually like to talk to others while cooking because my head is so consumed with ideas for the meal. It's like I am in my own euphoric state.

Does this happen to you? If so, I would like to know the details...

Standard Size Crockpot, how many quarts?
I'm fairly certain I have a standard size crock pot, but I can't find on it how many quarts it is so I can make sure I get a bigger one. Does anyone know how many quarts is standard and where's a good place to find something bigger?

In your kitchen, what's closest to hand?
You're standing in your kitchen in the place you spend the most time (for me it's at the wooden cutting board). What's closest to hand? For me, the spices are all in a drawer just to my left. The cooktop is to my left. In the drawer under the cooktop are all my cooking utensils: spatulas, stirrers, etc. Behind me is my fridge, and the sink is a bit of a walk around the kitchen island. My pie utensils are in the drawer to my right, and the stuff I use the least are in the far drawer -- like turkey basters, and choppers, and other arcane utensils (don't ask). And, of course, my pots and pans are all under the cooktop. I could probably cook there blindfolded. What about you?
