image of the current screen to your Clipboard and paste it into Paint or whatever photo/picture editing software you have or you can use the built-in Vista Snipping tool. To use this do the following:

To start the Snipping Tool please follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu. The Start button looks like this: Vista Start Button
  2. Then click on the All Programs menu option.
  3. Then click on the Accessories group
  4. Finally click on the bulletin Snipping Tool icon which looks like this: Snipping Tool Icon

The snipping tool should now be started and you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Snipping Tool Main Screen

It's pretty easy to use, you can alter it to take a free form snip of your screen or the entire screen or a Rectangular snip.

Select the Rectangular Snip in Vista

You can find it under the Start button.  Select Accessories, then Snipping Tool.  I made a shortcut for it and drug it down to my left hand 'shortcut' tray where it is always accessible.  You can highlight or circle with a pen.  You can also add as a graphic to a message (like below) or send it directly to a friend.

You can also use the print screen key if you use a graphic program to remove the unwanted portions or I often use the screen saver in Microsoft notes for receipts and this type of information because it makes a permanent file that can be filed under a particular subject.

There is a key PRT SCR (print screen) on the keyboard, normally on the upper side. Press SHIFT+PRT SCR and the current screen will be copied to your clipboard. You can open it using Corel PhotoPaint or another picture editor. On Corel PhotoPaint you retrieve the screen shot on "new from clipboard" command.

It works on earlier Windows versions too.

Hope that helps,

Vista has a cool Snipping tool for this.

Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories and select Snipping tool. It may ask you to install it on your tool bar. Do that and them follow directions to do a New screen shot. Good luck.....
