Seriously,
Try a pumace stone.

Before treating a callus, soak your foot in comfortably hot water for several minutes. Then, says Dr. Cowin, use a callus file or pumice stone to lightly abrade the area and rub off the top layers of skin. Finish by applying some hand cream, such as Carmol 20, which contains 20 percent urea and helps dissolve hard skin. If you have bad calluses, make this part of your daily routine after showering or bathing.

"What I've done"

Years of sports (particularly tennis) has given me very thick callouses at the base of my big toe (from planting and changing directions).

As I've stopped playing competively, I've done a few things to tone them down.

I also used to get bad cracks on my heels.

My heels are no longer cracked - the final solution ended up being that I stopped wearing sandals all together.  While I wore sandals, the only way I could keep them from cracking was to moisturize daily and use a pumic stone in the shower to brush away the skin.

The daily moisturizer and pumice stones is also how I tamed the big ones on my big toes.

Now, I'll also comment on the "soft pretty feet" thing.  If anything, soft feet are impractical.  If you have some callouses built up, it means your feet have some natural protection to support your active lifestyle.  Soft and uncalloused feet just mean you're going to blister at the first sign of physical activity.

So, work on the cracking heels...those are no fun..but don't sweat the build up of skin that's going to keep you from getting blisters.

walking along the beach tends to really soften up callouses, makes your feet extremely smooth.

I sometimes use a very fine filing board to file them down a bit, but in the end what does it matter if you have some big callouses?  is someone complaining about it?  Almost anyone who runs or does anything active has them, its pretty common.

Also try a pumous stone, that may be the wrong spelling, pumus maybe.  I've had really good experiences with it with callouses on my hands from weight lifting.

hope this helps

I bought this product called microplane from qvc and it is the ultimate remover for hard dry callused skin. I have had plenty of pumice stones and callus removers but this product is really unbelievable and pretty inexpensive. I love it and would recommend it to everyone!
