Details:

I am not interested in buying any more CD's because I can not handle storing them. However, I do not believe that DRM is ethical and I want no part in it. On the other hand, I do not want to download music illegally. Any pointers much appriciated!

All of the following are DRM free.

allofmp3.com: very popular but the legality is questionable.

audiolunchbox.com: 2,000,000 songs, mostly independents.

emusic.com: 2,000,000 songs, also mostly independents.

You can also find more on wikipedia's comparison page.

Try indiestore.com - it does'nt have popular artists, only independent ones, but a lot of great tunes, and no DRM. Some of the tracks are even free, and of course it is a legal site.

We have had very good experiences with Emusic.com.  They have a LOT of music -- and let you download non-DRM-fouled MP3 files.

"Legality is a grey area at best for many music download sites but I've found one I love for MP3s"

www.AllofMP3.com

This is a Russian website who has had ongoing legal battles, like most music download sites, but remains up and running today.  It is not free (so does that in itself make it legal?) but it is VERY inexepensive.  It is also web based, not peer-to-peer.

Give it a try and decide for yourself.

Good Luck!

"Emusic.com"

I use Emusic.com for my downloads where I can get them in MP3 format.  They do not have additional DRM restrictions on them.

The music selection from Emusic ranges from a lot of Independents, Comedy, Oldies and Some Current Surprises.

I purchase from Emusic and get my music for less that $0.25 / song with no additional headaches of DRM.

BLU, regarding your answer "Emusic.com": Yes, emusic does look like it has the best selection (aside from allofmp3.com, which is a little too legally iffy for me) - but I hate the idea of a monthly subscription where I must continue to download music in order to get my moneies worth. I want to be able to buy what I want when I want it, and only be charged for that purchase.
