Details:

I'm a newbie guitar player and would like to get a good set of of headphones so that when I practice I won't disturb the rest of my family or the neighbors. I had narrowed things down to the Grado SR80 open headphones or the Sennheiser HD280PRO closed ones, but now I'm finding out I may need a headphone amplifier. In looking at some of the headphone amplifiers online, I noticed that many already come with a smaller set of headphones. So I'm a little confused. Bottom line is that I want a decent set of headphones that I can use to practice guitar and for listening to music on my PC or stereo. Any recommendations? Thank you.

Like a lot of people asking questions on askville you have left out some important information so I'll assume some things. I’ll assume you have an electric guitar. You didn’t say if you have a guitar amplifier. Some of the smaller guitar amplifiers have a headphone output. You may need a connector adapter. If you do, you can get one at Radio Shack.

I have been using Sony MDR-CD180 stereo headphones for years now and they work fine for me. Remember that guitar frequencies are a lot lower than those of regular stereo music.

If you have a lot of money to spend you can buy a TASCAM portable memory guitar trainer MP-GT1. It will allow you to download mp3s of your favorite songs so you can play with them. It also has a guitar tuner, metronome, effects, and a slow playback mode.

Good luck. Keep practicing. Don’t hang your thumb over the fretboard. Use a metronome.

I forgot to say in my answer, but don't buy BOSE headphones. Long story, they don't work right.
