I don't see the point of letting an inanimate object win by a large margin, especially since I probably shouldn't be playing those games to begin with.

When I'm feeling virtuous I just keep going and hope I can turn things around, at least a little. It's good practice in most games to try to turn things around from a losing position so in the long term its probably a good way to actually improve -- it's often much easier to keep going from a winning position than to make any progress at all from a weak one.

On the other hand, when things aren't going so well, after a bad day, when I just want to relax a little I do sometimes just start again when things go really badly early on. I guess most people are probably similar; sometimes we all just want an easy life...

Of course, it's much easier to just give up on any game that goes badly when playing against a computer than against real people, so I suppose that probably has some bearing on things: if you are playing a game which you also play against real people sometimes, then it's much more worthwhile to try to improve by carrying on when things aren't going well.

There's always a chance that I'll score big toward the end of the game and beat the beast.

You'll laugh, I have this stupid thing that I won't give it up for the night unless I'm a winner.  Some nights, I'm so tired, the computer keeps winning....I just will not quit until I win.

Wonder what a shrink would have to say about that?  LOL

I’m not a competitive person by nature, so if I’m playing a game against the computer, I’m not in it to impress anyone with my high score, but I am hoping usually to have the opportunity to meet a challenge.  If I’m playing something where both luck and skill enter into it, and luck is just beating me about the head with my own torso, and I’m just not even being given the tools I would need to succeed (for example, if I’m playing Hearts and I’m dealt 6 hands in a row that are just plain unwinnable no matter how well I play), then I might restart it, not for the sake of feeling like if I lost by a huge margin that it would bother me, but because maybe a new draw of the cards will give me something I can work with.  I guess I don’t mind losing knowing that I could have won if I’d done something better...that’s a learning experience that will make me a better player, and I don’t care about the feeling of acheivement for having bested the computer or having obtained a higher score, but I do not like to lose if the whole exercise in playing was just a pointless one at best.  If I feel, what could I possibly be gaining by playing this out to the end, it’s just a waste of my time.
