A troglodyte refers to a member of an early hominoid species. This species was not very advanced or civilized. When you describe someone as a troglodyte, you are saying they are unadvanced or uncivilized.

Troglodyte is part of the scientific term for chimpanzees, but is also used to refer to a caveman. In the popular roll-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, it was a term used for a humanoid monster. One way or the other, the term entered popular terminology as an insult for someone who seems "unevolved" or reactionary.
