Oil shale creates large amounts of waste water and solid wastes from processing, and is worse from a global warming perspective than regular oil. Additionally, it is likely that it will be a full 12 years before we have the technological knowledge needed to extract this resource in a manner that is safe and efficient, and even longer before we get the infrastructure put together to turn 'oil shale" into usable transportation fuels in a meaningful quantity.
