Details:

I can't seem to figure out how to make a previous basic version Windows Media Player my default player on XP. Other aggressive players like QuickTime keep taking over my computer. I seem to remember that I figured out where to go to do this once before, but I can't remember where I went. Control Panel and "programs/accessories" don't seem to offer any options for this.

On Windows XP, go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Select Set Program Access and Defaults.  Select and expand Custom. Set Windows Media Player as your default media player, as shown below:

 

 

If your OS is Vista or Windows 7, Enter Start, Search, and start typing Default Programs.  Open the dialog for that and set Windows Media Player as your default.
