Can I replace an average-size internal hard drive with a really big internal one? Are there any important drawbacks/disadvantages to a really large internal hard drive [maybe 500 gigabytes]?

An external hard drive can always be used with your other computers or when you buy a new computer. If you do a lot of video editing a large internal drive is useful.

I agree with Blurhino. Add the external HD as an oversize storage container and let the original drive operate the OS.
