Details:

I thought that I had read that telemarketers were not allowed to call mobile phone numbers. Is that true? Yesterday I was surprised when I had a voice mail from a telemarketer on my mobile phone.

They're not allowed to use automatic dialers, and it takes more man-hours if they have to dial by hand, which cuts out a lot of their profit margin.

And cell phone numbers are unlisted, so they can't know which numbers are valid and which aren't.

Finally, since incoming calls usually cost money, the major telemarketers know that they're going to get slapped down hard and fast if they start calling cell phone numbers.  Telemarketing calls are annoying, but being forced to pay for them would generate massive consumer outrage.

So, it's legal for a telemarketer to call you, but they usually don't.  You obviously got pegged by somebody that did.

You can register your cell phone at the do-not-call registry, which might cut it down even further, but if you only got one call it may not be worth even that much trouble.

"Depends on to whom you gave the number"

If you gave your mobile phone number to someone with whom you do business, there is the possibility that they have sold your name and number.  For example, if you signed up for a credit card and gave your mobile number for your contact number, the credit card issuer probably sold your name and number if you didn't "opt out" of their marketing.

If it was a randomly generated list of numbers (do telemarketing companies even use those any more?) it may just have been a "lucky" hit.

Also, I don't think that there is any law that prevents a telemarketer from calling a mobile phone.  I think it's simply that those numbers haven't been made public and are more difficult for them to get.  HOWEVER, I may be completely wrong on this point.

A very simple explanation, but the only one that I have!

If you've ever given your Cell Number to any business you work with, they have the right to use that number for marketing. Sometimes they market stuff under a different corporate name or even a different company. It could be legit... but it probably isn't.

In general, I do not answer Cell Calls from phone numbers I do not recognize. If they leave a message, I wait until free time to get that message.

"you should register your cell number as well as your home number with the national do not call registry"

then once you are added into the database they should not call you, but i think the telemarketing companies only have to update list every 6 months.

it isnt illegal but it is a very bad business practice. If you tell the company that is calling you that its your cell phone they have a seperate "disposition" that they mark and it should be removed from that list.
