Details:

I cannot find any sort of steel cans that I can put my bake goods to send it oversea. Would a box be a good idea?

Thank you.

"Hi Lil, yes a box will work but to be sure that your baked goods arrive in one piece you need to protect them. "

I ship overseas on a regular basis and I always use boxes but you have to really protect whatever is in the box. Find a plastic food container that will hold all of your baked goods but that just barely holds them so that they won’t have room in there to move around. Better yet, wrap them in foil and then put them in using the foil as needed to make sure that the container is stuffed full. Then wrap the container with bubble wrap and put it into the box. Try to use enough bubble wrap so that the container just barely fits in the box because you don’t want it sliding around in there. I use water activated tape to seal my boxes because it bonds with the box and is impossible to open without cutting the tape but a roll of that is pretty expensive just for one shipment. Just make sure that you tape it well and when you take it to the post office be sure to mark on the customs form that it is a gift and has no commercial value. I hope that this helps.

"You can be sure your bake goods will go stale during the trip"

You can be sure your bake goods will go stale during the trip. Sending fresh goods overseas will probably not be a good idea.

More generic, a box usually is a good container for sending goods, as long as it is sturdy. Keep in mind that the package will have to endure a bit during the trip, so you should package whatever you want to send in such a way that it can be dropped without breaking. You can use foam inside the box to fill it up and make it more robust. Make sure you tape it tight and secure.

"A can would be a lot sturdier than a box"

But if the box is reinforced well enough and you pack everything well, it might be just as good. Depends on how you ship it and how gently (ha) it's handled while it's traveling.

With a cardboard box, you also have to worry about moisture and depending on where it's headed and how long it takes to get there, you could end up with bugs nibbling on the baked goods.

But before you give up on cans, ask friends and neighbors if they buy coffee in cans and ask them to save one for you. That's the really cheap way.

Almost as cheap, go to a dollar store or discount store and see if they have any cookie tins for sale that are reasonably cheap. If they still have Christmas-decorated cans, you might be able to get a few for little money.

Another option would be those disposable plastic containers. They're more rigid than cardboard, and would be mositure-proof and bug-proof if they seal well. You could pack that inside a cardboard box and it would probably hold up as well as a can of some sort.

"Try a thrift store or Walmart"

You could get some tins at Walmart or thrift stores that would work fine. You know, the round ones they sell those Danish cookies in. Shoot, buy some Danish cookies at Walgreens for $1.99 and use the tin from those. I saw some nice plastic containers at Walmart too at Christmas time that I used to put cookies in. Different sizes and shapes, I got a small bucket and put socks in it and a cool square container with a plastic window and snowmen on it for cookies. They were less than $3 each. They usually have something to go with whatever the next holiday is, they probably have Valentines ones at the moment. They were in the housewares aisle with plastic plates and cups and such.
A box might allow for drying out and isn't good protection from being squished but if it's well packed it would probably work anyway. I still think it would be worth a couple bucks for metal or plastic though.

"Inexpensive cans at Wal-Mart"

I have seen all sizes of canisters and metal containers in the housewares department at Wal-Mart.  Some are plain and some painted fancy.  You might also ask at restaurants, or ask your neighbors if they will save their large coffee cans for you.  They are strong and have a plastic cover.  I don’t think a wooden box would be too good for shipping baked goods over seas.  It would add a lot to the weight and the baked goods wouldn’t stay as fresh.

What about some of the heavy duty plastic storage boxes?  They come in a variety of sizes.  There is a huge selection at Wal-Mart.
