Details:

What kinds of tomatoes do you grow in your garden? I like Marion (heirloom tomato) they are average size and a good flavor. I also grow Early Girl for the acid/sweet flavor. They are small but good for sauces. Can't beat Sweet-100s for cherry tomatoes in a salad. What are your favorites--am I missing out on some of the newer varieties?

"Tomatoes and Me"

Tomatoes are truly one of my passions in life, and I eat them often. I could have the classic tricolore salad with tomatoes, avocado, buffalo mozzarella and basil every day of my life and not get tired of it.

I have little time to garden, but I usually will find a way to grow a couple of plants of Early Girls and/or Sweet 100s every year. I’ve never had much luck with beefsteaks, and I’ve never tried to do heirlooms. But I am always happy to see them appear at my local store, and I will spend more money than I should in order to get a good heirloom tomato. Others may spend their money on good cuts of meat or exquisite chocolates. Give me a good tomato any day!

I was unaware until I saw your question that there were so many varieties of heirloom tomatoes. The websites below lists dozens of them. I usually just think of the little reddish-purple ones, or the yellow pear shaped ones. I do know the Brandywines and the Black Brandywines, and I like them a lot. I suppose they are my favorites. I’m not familiar with Marions.

If I didn’t do so much travelling in the spring and summer, I would love to try growing heirloom tomatoes. Maybe some day!

"I really like the mildness of yellow tomatoes the best, then the tart sweetness of the red/yellow striped tomatoes..."

I guess my number one would be Lemon Boy.  It's super sweet and mild tasting.

Next for me is Mr. Stripey.  Very sweet, with just a bit of tartness.

For a red variety, I like the Brandywine beefsteak.  Yum! A nice thick slice on my hamburger!

For snacking, gimme a whole bunch of yellow pears!  Yummy!

"Early Girl and German Pinks"

I like Early Girl too.  It has a good flavor and produces early and often and just keeps going.  If I start growing the plants indoors early enough, I can get tomatoes from middle of June through October from an Early Girl plant.  (The plant will have grown out of the tops of my large tomato cages and be hanging over back near the bottom by that time. )

German Pinks are an heirloom that my parents grow.  Very good flavor, very meaty, really large (pink) tomatoes.

"Romas."

Romas are excellent sauce tomatoes and they're good just cut onto sandwiches or in salads. They're very meaty and you taste a lot more than watery bags --like some tomatoes seem to be to me. They don't get bigger than a small woman's fist, but each plant produces a lot and each one is packed with flavor.

I've grown Romas several times and had more tomatoes come from a small six-pack of started plants than I could manage. They just kept producing and producing even in Tucson's heat with more red (fruit) on the plant than green (leaf). My plants got to be about waist high and stayed there but gave me fruit like crazy for up to three seasons each year. (A  couple of times we only got two seasons out of them.)

I never picked Romas early but if I touch the fruit and it falls off the vine it's ready to eat.

I haven't tried them in a cooler climate yet, but I plan to try them this year in Seattle. If you've never tried them, I think you should. You'll get a whole lot of tomato for your $1.49 or so six-pack of small plants.

Cheers!

We had a plant that produced yellow pear tomatoes and they were really great. Just one plant by the kitchen door produced what we wanted to eat and some really good preserves. Yum!!
