He took the collected mythos of the British Isles and Germanic culture and created the High Fantasy genre. Most fantasy literature these days, not to mention the entire D&D universe and its myriad spinoffs, is derived from his groundbreaking work. Add to that his wonderful commentary on the ravages of war, and you get literature that, while fantasy, maintains a mainstream popularity.

This has some beautiful color plates by Alan Lee; he went on to do the visual design for the movies, so you can see the similarities.

His characters are very human - or very much not human.  He takes the world you know and can spin it around in a completely different direction than you ever saw it before.

It doesn’t hurt that I read Neverwhere shortly before the first time I was in London.  "Mind the Gap" takes on a completely different meaning.

He's also a great graphic novelist, but I'm not a good person to comment on those.

A close second for me is another Brit: Jasper Fforde (yes, that’s spelled right), for similar reasons.  The everyday world is surreal after you read his books: I keep expecting to be able to find dodos for pets and mammoths out in the forest.  (Sorry - you gotta read some of his books to get that.)  YOu might be able to consider some of his work science fiction, but it's a little too fantastical for that.

I'm not counting authors who are primarily science fiction, with a dose of fantasy injected into the sci-fi.

He has a wide-ranging assortment of characters in the Forgotten Realms series of books, not to mention his other works.

He spends time developing his characters, their relationships with the other characters, and always seems to build up to an awsome climax that always possesses me and makes me read the last few chapters.

Latest post on this question's discussion board:

Somehow Terry Pratchett features only once in this discussion. I must admit that JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis were practically the founding fathers of the genre in recent times. I say recent times because much of the mythology established thousands of years ago and handed down through storytelling is what forms the basis of all the fantasy genre.

Terry Pratchett has written over thirty Discworld novels as well as a handful of unrelated fantasy titles (The Bromeliad Trilogy being especially worthy of note). The development of the Discworld universe, the sheer multitude of characters and species and the satire that is inextricably linked with the backdrop of every novel push Pratchett fantasy towards the top of the fantasy author list. His phenomenal commercial success is just a happy coincidence for Mr Pratchett.

Isaac Asimov was mentioned too. Once we're treading the Sci-Fi/Fantasy border we can't leave the great Douglas Adams out either. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy (5 books, still a trilogy) stands on its own as a genre-defying masterpiece that no Sci-Fi or Fantasy fan should neglect.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman series as well as the majority of his novels are possibly the most highly underestimated gems of the fantasy world. Start with a tentative dip into his short story collections like 'Smoke and Mirrors' or 'Fragile Things' if you'd like to know what he's all about then jump into the deep end with the marvellous 'American Gods'.

The list could go on for ever if we include younger readers of fantasy who are blessed with authors like Roald Dahl with timeless yarns like The BFG, Astrid Lindgren with Brothers Lionheart and all the other fables we were brought up on.

Just don't dismiss Terry Pratchett, whatever you do.
