Details:

Last night I watched Iron Chef, the Japanese version. I was appalled that they were serving horse fat, in particular the fat from beneath the mane of the horse. They kept saying how delicious it was raw. I was totally grossed out and had to stop watching the show.

How about you? What wouldn't you eat?

"Dog meat... there is almost no way I could even think of it..."

I would also have some trouble with horse.  My husband was served donkey in China and said it was actually good but I doubt I would have tried it had I known.  Snake I could do and maybe even rat (though not happily) and I wouldn’t willingly eat bugs of various kinds or snails but that is because of the "ick factor".  I do not care for liver (taste or texture) and find it very difficult to swallow; yet I know many people find it a delicacy.

Horses and dogs I see as friends and the thought of raising them for food seems rather horrible to me.  I realize that cows, pigs and chickens also have their supporters but, due to my upbringing, consuming them seems more natural.  I suppose if I were served it in my capacity of faculty wife I could manage to cut it very small on my plate and move it around but I don’t think I would dare put it in my mouth for fear of the consequences.  I did manage to swallow a small whole baby octopus when it was served in my soup but I basically "closed my eyes and thought of England" to do it.

Thank goodness I am going out for dinner... not sure I could face cooking after this...

Me, I can talk about horse fat and could watch the cooking program.  But, I couldn't actually eat the fat--not because it came from the horse, but because, I really dislike eating fat. It is popular in Chinese cuisine as well.

What would cause me to look the other way in a restaurant is a dish of mountain oysters--which is a delicacy in many cuisines including Turkish cuisine...sorry, I was going to paste in a picture, but I'm getting too grossed out...I assume you know what they are.  If not, trusty Wikipedia will help you out.

OK...and I though the Food topic was safer than the Religion topic...I'll take debates over atheism any day... :)

I just cannot bring myself to contemplate munching on chocolate dipped ants or deep-fried grasshoppers. I've said no to barbecued witchetty grubs and deep-fried locusts. I had to avert my eyes from the scorpions on sticks in a market in China.

Just to prove I'm not a food coward, I admit I've enjoyed kangaroo sausages (very lean), grilled emu schnitzel and crocodile steaks. I love garlic frog legs and garlic snails.

Raw horse fat? Hmmm, I'd say that's a neigh from me, too. How would you feel about dog stew?
