Details:

I have heard a rumor that if you hide drugs in say...a can or bag of coffee, that the dog cannot smell it. I think this is crap, but I just wanted to know what others had to say about this - can it be true?

Note this blurb:

In the constant battle to remove illegal drugs from the street, dogs trained to detect the drugs are invaluable to police departments. Trained dogs like Jester can detect drug amounts as minimal as marijuana seeds that may have fallen into the cracks of a vehicle. Even when illegal drugs are hidden in coffee beans, with their overpowering aroma, these dogs can smell the scent of any drug that is present. The same is true when strong fragrances or fabric softener sheets are used to mask a drug’s scent.

I also have heard first-hand accounts that they can do smell drugs through just about anything. I used to consult for some government agencies that did this kind of thing. I won't say which ones, but it's pretty easy to imagine. The agents I spoke to told me more than one story about dogs sniffing drugs out. That coffee can rumor is nonsense.

Obviously, a random dog won't know, but a dog that is trained to seek out cocaine is going to find the cocaine. Masking the smell won't help.

"One notable quality of detection dogs is that they are able to discern individual scents even when the scents are combined or masked by other odors. In one case at an Australian prison, a detection dog foiled an attempt to smuggle drugs that had been hidden in a woman's bra and smeared with coffee, pepper and Vicks vapo-rub."

Another interesting fact: "Dogs have nearly 220 million smell-sensitive cells over an area about the size of a pocket handkerchief (compared to 5 million over an area the size of a postage stamp for humans)."

So, a motivated, well trained dog is going to find the coke, even if it's in coffee.
