I don't want to attempt to pry it open - just want to know if I'm missing anything else.

You should find a small hole on the front of the optical drive.  Straighten out a paper clip and insert it straight into the drive to release the catch, and it should pop open without damage to the drive or any disk that might be inserted.  They are designed this way:

"If you are talking about a CD or DVD drive..."

...look very closely at the "door"/"tray".  You should see a very small little hole.  That is the manual release.  Take a small paperclip and open it up.  Carefully insert one end of the paperclip gently into the hole.  You should feel the door all of a sudden release. Put the paperclip away, take your cd/dvd out and close the drive door again. Reboot your computer and see if you are back to normal.

Good luck!

"This happened to me once- what happened was the E drive would not open and the computer could not read it"

I called the company up and they suggested a few things.  What finally worked was when I uninstalled the drive.  On startup the drive reinstalled and then it worked.  A few other ideas that you could try are returning your computer to a backup point, reintegrating a backup of the registry, and deleting keys in the registry that refer to the drive.  Be careful if you mess with the registry and try to back it up before you do anything.  Also, check if there was a recent automatic update to the driver of your drive.  In some cases these can get corrupted.  Maybe if there was a recent update you can download the old one and try to use that again.  Good luck!
