How to Cut Your Own Bangs

Bangs
Many people try to cut their own bangs, or their children's. This usually ends up in disaster. Here is the professional way to trim bangs - it will save you a lot of money!

Steps
1. Select area to be cut. Push hair on sides behind your ears, or clip back.
2. Decide how much of a bang you want.
3. Use the outer edge of the eyebrows to determine where to stop.
4. Comb the desired amount of hair down, and remember to make a neat part.
5. Gather the desired bang hair to a point in the center of your face.(According to how long you want your bangs). Example: If you want your bang length to be below your eyebrows, hold the hair at the bridge of the nose.
6. Twist the hair around and around about 3 or 4 times. All the while continuing to hold it in the center of your face, at the length desired.(see example)
7. Hold hair securely with your non-dominant hand and cut using one snip at the desired length. (The twisting will allow for extra length that is being stretched while you are holding it,and also will give the ends a "whispy" look, with little effort.)
8. After cutting, the bangs will fall to the desired length, with the sides being slightly longer than the center.

Tips

* Hair stretches and this is where people get in trouble. Comb the hair down and cut. Never try using your fingers as the guide.
* You can use different parts, one is just for a small bang, just from end of eyebrow to eyebrow, parting over the head, or a pie shape, mark your starting point at the ears, and draw down a section to the outer edge of the eyebrow.
* You can also try dividing your bangs into several sections and twisting each one. Hold and cut each section just below your eyebrows. Be careful not to raise your eyebrows while cutting.
* If you have very thin and/or fine hair(which means every little snip will be visible!), use this method: part wet hair so that you have separated only the bangs; comb this section down over your forehead, gather it and twist it round and round. With one hand, hold it just where you want your bangs to stop at the centre. With the other hand hold scissors vertically, and snip repeatedly until the hair ends have all been cut away up to where you are holding it. When combed out, this method gives a very natural cut line, and ensures the outer bangs gradually lengthen from the shorter central bangs.
* If you are accustomed to curling your bangs with a curling iron or roller, allow a little extra length.
* If your hair is naturally curly, allow a -lot- of extra length. (For example: people with ringlets shouldn't cut more than -half- of what seems to make sense to cut.) After each snip, allow your hair to bounce/scrunch/frizz/whatever into its natural shape, so that you can identify its new length before you continue.
* Also for curly hair: when cutting each curl, hold your scissors at a 45 degree angle, such that you'll make the hair on the outside edge of the curl longer than the hair on the inner edge of the curl. (This makes each curl end in a nice point and stay together better.)
* If you want diagonal bangs which slant to the side, cut a longer fringe then change your parting to the side.

Warnings

* Usually those "in-between" bang cuts need only be 1/4 inch.
* Start with a small amount, you can always go back and snip more, but you can't make it grow back faster!

Things You'll Need

* A pair of sharp scissors
* Narrow tooth styling comb
* A couple of clips to hold excess hair
* A mirror to look into, without having to hold it yourself

"When I was learning to give haircuts to my 6 little ones..."

I had a lot of trouble getting their bangs straight and even.

Finally, I just took a strip of masking tape and placed it just above the length that I wanted.  It was so much easier to adjust the masking tape to get a straight line.

Then I would just cut 1/4" below the masking tape...and, sure enough, nice straight bangs.

The masking tape doesn't pull the hair or hurt when carefully removed.

When the girls wanted the, then popular, 'pixie cut'...where the hair on the back of the head, from the crown, down was short, but the very ends were left long and flipped up...I lifted the hair to be cut and ran a strip of masking tape along my 'stop' line. That was a really cute hair style...short and easy to care for, but still feminine.

Having a special pair of long, narrow and sharp hair cutting scissors is a must.  Keep them put aside just for haircuts...cutting paper and other things dull them too quickly.

Hope that helps <:O)

Unless you have a six yr old who will sit very still.....mine never would.....take the hair you want to cut into bangs and pull it into a point directly over the nose.  Gauge how short or long you want the bangs to be then cut across. Let the hair fall where it may.  You may need to do this a second time if they need to be shorter.  If the bangs are too rigid, pull them again and cut the very tips of the bang with the tips of the sissors vertically a few snips.  You'll get a softer look.  I still cut my own bangs this way!  Good Luck!

"VERY, VERY CAREFULLY! Seriously, it's very easy. Measure bangs to the bridge of her nose without tugging."

Snip whatever is below your fingers, using the center of the bridge of her nose as your first cut.  Comb down another section, use this length as your guide, but do not cut straight across!  Angle the shears down a bit toward the end of her eyebrow.  Do the same on the section on the other side.  If you want to thin the bangs out a little, comb the bangs straight up, letting the longest pieces fall out.  Then, snip across, parallel to the floor.  This creates a little layering.  If her hair is really thick, I would just pick up the bangs and snip into them, chipping on the edges as you go, checking to see if more thinning is needed.  Be careful not to cut the length, just the upper edges.
