I'm thinking it is to make more money. Or to see first if anyone will buy the product, a company will release each individual season of shows and when they see enough people buying the season sets, than they know they will make money off of the complete series sets. Would they lose money if they first and just release the complete series of a show in a box set? I have bought several shows by seasons and than I found out about their complete series box set, so I have sold my other individual sets to get the full sets. But I have noticed that there is not much of a difference or if any at all on the DVDs dealing with extra bonus or special features. Sometimes I have noticed some extras in some complete series. Like with the I Love Lucy series, the complete collection includes an extra DVD and I believe with The X-Files collection, they include The X-Files movie. But with another series that I have, Full House, there no extras, just the Tanner house to store the DVDs in. Any opinions?

"To make more money"

Most likely to make more money.  A lot of people can’t wait until the complete series comes out on DVD so they buy the seasons.  It is also used as a measure to see the demand.  If not a lot of people buy the first few seasons, newer seasons may not show up on DVD or may be delayed.  Sometimes, complete series do contain extra bonus material not included in the separate season DVD releases.  Alias is one example.  The complete series DVD set has a bonus hidden disc in the special "Rambaldi" box.

(volume one, two, etc...)and (teaser sets) then sell whole seasons and finally complete series with a different cover and sometimes a bonus to get you to buy.  They all do it.

"It has got to be a money thing"

It has got to be a money thing to some extent, but it does also take time to add special features to the discs for each season. It makes more sense for studios to do these in order and then release them as they are produced. They may then choose to offer the entire series as a giant boxed set when everything is done.

If you think about the price point that most consumers can take, folks would have to save up for a while before they could buy an entire series for any long run program. In that case, then as a consumer I would prefer to have the series offered in seasons that I can afford instead of having to wait and save up to buy the entire series. I'd personally love to own the entire series of Buffy or The Simpsons but these are things that I have to buy in affordable chunks.
