I've heard and read that classical music is great for brain development for babies. What is it about classical music that is so unique that makes it great for babies? Why can't I play rock or country or jazz or rap?

"I think music is the key, not genre..."

There are many studies about prenatal stimulus, including classical vs other genres, music vs noise, talking vs music, and silence vs music and talking....

And the conclusions are that talking and music, no matter the genre, happen to be the most effective in helping increase brain development in not only gestating fetuses, but increase feeding speed after birth, lessening pain for the mother during birth, and during the first 5 years of brain development for children. The parts of the brain impacted most were memory, spatial understanding, voice recognition, and the social/conceptual areas of the brain.

People prefer to say classical music, probably because of the soothing tones, rare jumps/dips in decibel, and its good as background music while the mother does what she needs to do. Some say that the unusual timing and rhythm in classical music, rarely ever even coming close to the usual 3/4 or 4/4 time we expect in modern pop music, may help a developing child... but as far as I know, that is yet to be proven.... but what IS proven.. is that music (no matter the sort) seems to help ALL things grow.. from human brains to plants... *shrug* life is funny, art is better.

As long as the music is more song than noise (lots of random noise actually retards brain growth in MANY studies) and does not jump in decibel often (which pretty much IS noise to a fetus) will be just fine and dandy. I might like metal,.. but I still wouldnt subject a growing fetus to Slayer or Gwar.. ya know? hehe. Just dont expect them to like what you play by the time they’re 12.

"Auditory stimulation improves the development of the brain, classical does not overwhelm"

Classical music was designed to be soothing and is based on mathematical patterns. Babies are made smarter by any additional stimulation they receive, in this case auditory. It causes additional and more solid neural connections to be constructed. However, their auditory apparatus is still only partially developed and they can easily be overwhelmed by too much noise, which is almost the definition of rock. Classical music is also completely instrumental, and it may be the case that the addition of vocals is also overwhelming to the infant. Therefore, country and rap could also overwhelm them, just not as easily as classical.

Hi Anchorman -

Apparently there’s still some controversy on the subject so it wouldn’t be right for me to give an opinion. You can check it over at these BBC links:

in my honest opinion.....

i am a firm believer that it is music in general that helps the development of babies and the mind development of kids.  i do not believe that they have to listen to classical to get the benefit from listening to music.  they all benefit from learning rythym, beat, harmony, etc.etc.  they may not know the exact terms, but it really aids in learning later in life....  music is an activity that they can be learning all this without even consciously trying.....

listening to music can also be a very calming activity for kids (and babies)

I grew up in a household where classical music/opera blared throughout the day and especially at night.  I learned to go to sleep listening to opera and symphonies.

Now, when I pay big bucks to go to this orchestra or that philharmonic, all that happens is that I fall asleep. I don't find it boring at all.  I love the music.  But it is predictable. I fall asleep.  Don't do that to your kids.  Raise them on rock and roll and let them enjoy going to the Met or Avery Fisher Hall when they grow up.
