Details:

If I buy a verizon treo 650 on ebay and the I get it activated, will they require that i get a data plan or could I just get away with a regular phone plan.

I realize that if I don't get a data plan I can't use the web browser. But I am only wanting to use the other pda part of it and do with the web browser. I know that when you buy a new phone and a new plan they require you to choose a data plan but I thought maybe I could do without it if I have a used phone.

I don't know about you but for me 46 dollars a month for data plus a cell phone plan on top of that is just to expensive for me.

They will try to sell you the unlimited data plan, and if you are having any kind of emal pushed to your device wirelessly you should seriously consider it.  Paying per kilobyte of data can be enormously expensive, on single picture , if not formatted correctly can run over thirty dollars...so be carefull.  However if you are only using the organizer functions...you don't have to have the data plan, and ther is also a 10meg package, for $24.  The sales team gets credit for those unlimited data packages, so of course they want you to buy it.

A word of caution on buying the Treo on Ebay....Unless the seller has a high rating, it is a crap shoot. I have tried to activate many a phone a customer has bought on ebay, that is listed as lost, stolen, or is attached to a bad account.  If you are activating a new line of service, take advantage of the deals you get when you sign up, you have the same plan options as if you use a old phone, without the headaches.  You won't get those discounts again until you renew your contract, 12 to 22 months later.

you have two options ask them to add "block national access" to your account, and remove the picture messaging ability, then you cannot be charged for any data charges, or have it set to a pay as you go plan, and hope no one tries to use the internet because the rate works out to about $15 per meg, which is crazy, (for example a picture would cost $1-$2 just for the data transfer, not to mention the pix charge of $.25)

What plan you pick is up to you, independent of your phone. Independent of what phone you have you can pick whatever plan you want. I'm positive that they will let you use that phone without the data part of the plan. Of course this also means that you won't be able to, or they will charge you a fortune, to use the data features.

CaptainRandom, regarding your answer "yes,": As of mid-December 2006 pix messaging on PDA phones no longer charges data transport fees. This means that people using PDA phones are not charged kilobyte usage for sending / receiving pix messages, even if they don't have an unlimited or 10MB pix package.
