"Vista Redux ? "

Most of my customers who bought Vista machines have now purchased a legal copy of XP Pro and have reloaded that into their new machines. (Drivers can be a hassle!) Vista may be a stable and easy to use product eventually, but in a family with multiple user logins, the security hassles that Vista has make it a nightmare to try to actually use the machine.

I've understood that Vista has a Service Pack coming out fairly "soon". And. XP will have SP3 out soon as well. One of the beta reviewers recently posted that, with the same hardware and RAM, XP is still 2x faster than Vista with the new service pack betas.

XP likes 2 Gb RAM, 1 is so-so ok. Vista wants all you can install, and still runs poorly. And, oh yes, Vista only recognizes the first 3 Gb of ram in the machine, unless you spring for the 64-bit package. Good going, Microsoft.  (Where did I put that copy of Ubantu linux..?)

I don't know if there is a easy way to downgrade Vista to XP. Might ask around.

Good luck!

Microsoft does not give money back for Vista. It is possible to load XP on your computer, and XP should run fine, but you'd have to buy the retail version at a store.

Microsoft's licensing won't let you transfer your old copy of XP to a new computer. But maybe where you bought your new PC might give you a discount or free copy of XP if you complain to them. There's been a lot of complaints about Vista lately.

If you're open to running linux, I suggest running Ubuntu Linux. See www.ubuntu.com, it comes with Firefox and OpenOffice, which can read and write MS Office documents.

"Dual boot or install XP instead of Vista"

Of course. You have two possibilities:

1/ Install Windows XP in dual boot.
See: http://www.syschat.com/dual-boot-vista-xp-vista-already-1946.html
Or: http://apcmag.com/5485/dualbooting_vista_and_xp

2/ Remove Vista and install XP instead
Put your XP disk.
Reboot your computer.
Format your partition where Vista is installed.
Select it to install Windows XP.
Reboot...

Now you can use XP instead of Vista which I don't really like too..

However, if you do this, keep in mind that you are stepping back to 'old' technology.  You're time and money may be better spent by investigating your performance issues and solving them.
