Details:

I am looking for a good and detailed book on world history, since my education gave me rather little on non-western civilization history. I have done some research and I have some picks that don't cover me fully. First, is "The New History Of The World" by J.M. Roberts. However reviewers say it focuses mainly on western civilization, which is something I don't want. Then, we have "A history of Civilizations" by F. Braudel, which is old (so not up to date with current research) and has a cold-war era bias, and lastly "A Study of History", by Toynbee, which has a 2-volume Abridged version, but is even older than Braudel's work. So, any other recommendations that might suit better my requirements of depth (it should be detailed), breadth (not focusing on western) and up-to-dateness?

"Here's a suggestion"

You might want to try the following:

World's History, The, Combined Volume (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
by Howard Spodek (Author)
List Price: $116.00
Price: $116.00 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping

However, given your interest I would recommend trying to find several volumes that concentrate on specific regional histories rather than one all inclusive tome. You're most definitely right in that a Western bias is common in most English language books that try to cover the subject too broadly. So I'd also like to suggest these books for starters:

History of Asia, A (5th Edition) (Paperback)
by Rhoads Murphey (Author)
List Price: $80.67
Price: $80.67 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping

A History of Latin America (Paperback)
by Benjamin Keen (Author), Keith Haynes (Author)
List Price: $71.96
Price: $59.73 & this item ships for FREE with Super Saver Shipping
http://www.amazon.com/History-Latin-America-Benjamin-Keen/dp/0618318518/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-1268199-1111934?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174681934&sr=8-1

I'd check the footnotes for any references to other books that you might also want to pursue.

Good luck!!

"Howard Spodek’s books might be to your liking but I would suggest a different tact altogether."

It is truly hard to find a good history book that does justice to non-western cultures, a fact that you seem to have noticed. I would recommend that instead of trying to find such a book that you try reading three or four books that concentrate on different regions of the world. If you do this you will end up getting a far better education in the subject and won’t have to skip around in a single volume trying to avoid subjects that don’t interest you.
