LC's Bar-B-Q - 9.8/10 5800 Blue Pkwy Kansas City, MO 64129 (816) 123-4484
The Scene LC's is as unpretentious as any place you'll find. Line up and savor the smoky aroma at the order counter, where you're nearly face to face with the pit-master himself. A long stick is used to retrieve your slab from the smoker and the ribs are sliced while you wait.
The Food The double-stack sandwiches are huge. The homemade sausage is coarse ground and tangy. The sauce is spunky with a bit of sweetness, a lot of celery seed and a real kick. The zesty barbecued beans have chunks of meat and good flavor even if they're a little runny. Burnt ends are chunks of brisket smothered in sauce between three pieces of bread. If you can spare an artery, try the lard-fried fries, which are hot, crispy and oh so tasty. Turkey sandwiches, sliced ham and pork, and smoked chicken halves are also available.
Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbeque - 9.6/10 101 W 22ND St Kansas City, MO 64108-1921 (816) 472-7427
In Short Art galleries call the historic Freight House district home, so it's no surprise that the latest Jack Stack outpost is more lofty than rustic, with the clientele and servers to match. Order a slab of ribs and a side of the smoky, meaty baked beans; for the true Jack Stack experience, try the burnt ends, created by Jack's father over 40 years ago.
Hayward's Pit Bar-B-Que - 9.6/10 11051 Antioch Rd Shawnee Mission, KS 66210-2121 (913) 451- 8080
In Short Hayward Spears and his family have been smoking up meats in Johnson County since the mid-1970s watching other barbecue joints come and go. Their secret to success is high quality, friendly service and family commitment. The carryout area helps ease the congestion in the waiting room. Savor those barbecued ribs, burnt ends, sausage, beef and pork. Hayward's sauce gives a kick with less of the sweetness seen in other local sauces.
