Details:

I am using a IMAC (newest version) with OSX (latest version) when I connect my WESTERN DIGITAL MY BOOK with a USB CONNECTION it keeps disconnetecting after about 15 minutes. I initialized the drive with OSX. If i try and use TIME MACHINE with the drive, it disconnects after a about 15 minutes. with a message saying the disk was ejeted improperly- u know the message you get if you remove a card/ drive without draging to the trash to eject properly. Thus time machine never gets to back up my data Is there something I need to install to correct this, is it a bug?, is my drive defective? I sent back the first drive I bought from them as it was dead on arrival and they sent me a replacement. now this one is not working properly? I did scan for virus and found none. - ANY ADVICE???

"I think you have a faulty drive, or at least one that isn't going to work well with your iMac."

The MyBook Essential doesn't have a power switch, as you pointed out. Instead, it takes its power cues from the system it's connected to (i.e. from the USB port). So as long as the USB port gets power, the drive should remain on and functioning.

I just double-checked with my local Apple engineer, and he's pretty sure that no Macs except the latest portables ever power the USB ports off, and they only do it on sleep. Since you're not sleeping the machine, and since you're getting the "improper disconnect" message, I'm about 99% certain your drive is failing to maintain proper communication with the Mac, and is shutting itself off thinking that the Mac is no longer running.

It could be a faulty USB port. Try the other ports on your machine just to be sure, but since you say it also fails on another computer, I'm pretty sure that's not the problem.

Take the drive back and exchange it for a new one. Better yet, return it, then look at my answer to this question about good external drives, and buy one of the non-Western-Digital units. I recommend the Mercury Elite drive that's cited last in that answer.

Good luck. Feel free to PM me if you need more help.

This would be my second choice, behind the OWC drives.

What does Western Digital say about his compatibilty with MAC for that specific hard drive?  It sounds like a compatibilty issue to me. Did software come in the box with the drive? Make sure the driver software is correctly installed.
