Details:

I'm not sure what it is called nowadays but years ago, MS Word had a feature called "show codes", allowing you to see the embedded codes (return, tab, etc) in a doc. Somehow I have enabled this feature in Outlook and cannot turn it off.

"Turn off Microsoft Word as your email editor, or turn off the Show/Hide Codes option"

It appears that you're using Microsoft Word as your email editor. The default Outlook editor doesn't give you an option to display the formatting codes.

Try this:

1. Open a new email message. See if the Standard toolbar is open at the top of the window (the toolbar with the New Message, Open, and Save buttons at the left end). If this toolbar isn't open, choose View > Toolbars > Standard to open it.
2. You may need to expand the size of your message window to see the whole toolbar. Look for the button that looks like a backward P; when you hold the cursor over it, the tooltip says Show/Hide.
3. Click the button to turn off the display of the formatting codes.

You can also turn off Word as your editor:

1. In Outlook's main window, choose Tools > Options.
2. Click the Mail Format tab at the top of the dialog box.
3. In the top section (Message Format), uncheck the Use Microsoft Office Word To Edit E-mail Messages box.
4. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Good luck!

"Look for the "paragraph" mark on the Standard toolbar"

If your Outlook is set up to use MS Word as the editor for creating messages, then when you're creating a message you'll see the MS Word Standard toolbar at the top of the window.  (If you don't see it, go to View -> Toolbars and make sure Standard is checked.)  In the Standard toolbar, there will be a Paragraph icon -- the one that looks sort of like a backwards P.  This controls the display of embedded formatting codes (return, tab, etc.)  You probably clicked that by mistake.  Click it now, and the formatting codes should disappear.

Are you sure you turned it on in OUTLOOK? With Office 2003, you can eMail (thru Outlook) a document you create in WORD (i.e., on the top of the WORD document window, there is an icon for emailing the document in Outlook). Anyway, I can tell you how you turned on that option in WORD, if that's what you did. Look for a character that looks kinda like a backwards "P" on the top of the WORD document screen and click on it. I hope this does it for you.
