Details:

scientific studies have shown that there is a direct, positive correlation between foot size and performance in spelling bees / spelling tests. how can you explain this correlation?

"Spelling bees"

Well, if you have bigger feet, more than likely you are a bigger person/adult, who probably can spell better than a tiny young person!

Big feet--grown up--better speller!

So my huge feet say that I am a better speller than a kindergardener (in most cases!!)

I actually won my 7th grade spelling bee! I still have the dictionary they gave to me as a prize!

"Older Kids Have Bigger Feet"

The older you are, the bigger your feet are (at least up to adulthood, at which time your feet pretty much stay the same size).

The older you are, the better you are at spelling.

Ergo, by the transitive property of logic, the bigger your feet are, the better you are at spelling.

My eight-year-old son has bigger feet than my six-month-old daughter does, and you can bet he’s better at spelling -- and just about everything else but crying for no apparent reason -- than she is.

My feet are bigger than my eight-year-old’s, and you better believe I could beat him in a spelling bee (although he’s improving every week).

There’s my explanation. I could’ve been wittier and more humorous with it, but my daughter kept us up a bit last night, and my brain's a little tired. :)

"Could it be this?!"

It seems silly but could be the answer, who knows?!

As you grow up your feet become larger and at the same time your spelling ability gets better, since adults usually spell words better than children!
