Q:
What size canister will hold 5 pounds of flour?
I'm looking to buy a set of canisters and I want the largest to hold a 5 pound bag of flour. The set I have now doesn't hold all of a 5 pound bag of flour.

A: Five quarts, and a bit
|
A pound of flour is just about one quart when sifted. Compacted, it may take up as little as 1.5 pints (3/4 of a quart).
You should be able to fit a five pound sack of flour into a five quart container. However, flour can fluff up considerably when you transfer it to the bag, and if you try to stuff it into exactly five quarts it may slop over the edges.
Either way, you can't reliably fit it into a four-quart (one gallon) container. So, you might want to get a 6 quart container (1.5 gallons).

A: My flour canister is about 4.5 quarts
|
my white sugar canister is slightly smaller (it could theoretically nest in the flour canister) The set is from tupperware - 4 tallish round canisters in graduated sizes. (largest is around 8.5" tall) I also have canisters I bought at safeway that are actually marked 4.5 qt on the bottom... I'm using those for other products, but they seem to be the same size as my flour canister, hence the estimate.
