A: I am a conservative who tends to vote Republican.
My "liberal" leanings are as follows:
1) I think the Public Defender’s offices are seriously underfunded. EVERYBODY deserves a fair trial and unfortunately justice has become a commodity.
2) I believe the death penalty is Constitutional, but I’m not very happy about its use in many cases. This relates to number 1 above.
3) I think the carbon cap and trade system is stupid as hell, but a direct tax on the production of known carcinogens and other pollutants that have proven and measurable harmful effects would be OK.
4) Although I know many former prisoners vote Democratic, I am opposed to laws that permanently deny the right to vote. Once someone has served their time, the punishments should end. And, I don’t think criminal records should be kept on anyone for more than 10 years. That’s enough time for people to turn their lives around and if they have been crime free that long the records should be closed.
5) The number of legal immigrants to our nation should be increased, a guest worker program needs to be implemented, and illegal immigrants need to be normalized in some way, BUT that southern border needs snipers and anti-personnel mines.
6) A free press in essential to democracy. Anti-trust provisions desperately need to be applied to decentralize ownership of the news media (news papers, broadcast, and radio).
7) NAFTA SUCKS!!!!!!!!! Currently we are exporting pollution and importing unemployment. It needs to be scrapped and a new trade treaty that prevents moving jobs to take advantage of lower environmental and labor standards should be implemented.
8) Expansion of civil rights to oppressed minorities. The unborn should be granted the most basic civil right: the right to life.
9) Labor Unions are needed to balance the economic power of corporations. Reagan’s undermining of the U.S. labor unions was not good for our long term security or prosperity. Labor unions should be expanded and provisions made to keep them independent of criminal (or political) influence.
10) We need to open direct talks with Iran. I think we could develop a minimally functioning relationship and cooperation on many issues.
11) Foreign aid could and should be increased. Here is a good list of projects to start on:

A: There's No Republican Candidate Attractive Enough for Me to Vote For Under Any Circumstances
|
Unless we reverted to one party rule (if we haven't already), there isn't a national Republican candidate I'd vote for for dogcatcher.
Rudy Guliani?? No moral compass. Doesn't even have the support of the FDNY or NYPD. Takes credit where credit isn't due. Married THREE times. His kids don't even like him.
Fred Thompson?? Not smart enough for the job. An undistinguished career in the Senate, a party hack who looks good on television, but basically an empty suit.
Ron Paul?? A conservative trying to disguise himself as a libertarian. Look at his voting record.
Mike Huckabee?? A 19th century mind. Gomer Pyle trying to be Ronald Reagan.
Mitt Romney?? The Robo candidate. Looks good, says whatever his handlers tell him. No real intellectual depth.
Tom Tancredo?? A one issue candidate. Embodies all the worst ideas.
I'd think about voting for Condi Rice.
