But my parents never gave me a curfew ever when I was growing up only because I had proven time and time again that I was responsible when I did go out and made good decisions and I never went out with guys that were the kind where my mother would have wanted to call the police on before I got out of the house! lol! I hung with a group of people that were a good bunch but it was too funny as they all had curfews and their parents were all very strict and they were the ones who always pushed the limits and wanted to date the wrong kind of guys and by our senior year in high school, their parents had reached a point that the only way they were allowed to go out on the weekends late at night would be if I was the driver (they knew I was a safe driver and didn't drink alcohol as my father was a major alcoholic) so I had to always drive them everywhere, pick them up, drop them off, keep them out of trouble (or try to...I eventually gave up and told them they were on their own!) and get them home in one piece without them getting any kind of tickets or ending up in jail! Ahhhh, high school...don't miss it one bit!

 

I went to Prom my junior year as well as my senior year so I'll just answer and I didn't have a curfew for either nights and ended up at the beach by the early hours of the next morning after having breakfast.

 

My senior year was the best because after Prom, my date and a big group of our friends had been invited over to one of the girl's home for breakfast. We were all figuring we'd just make stuff ourselves and try to be as quiet as possible so as not to wake up her mom. Boy, were we surprised when we arrived! Her mom greeted each couple at the door with gift bags that had cameras and little picture frames to commemorate the event and there was a HUGE table all decorated with the same colors as the theme from our Prom, streamers hung all over the place and her mom made the most amazing breakfast for all of us and we had a blast! She did made-to-order omelets and fruit filled waffles and all sorts of things (there were at least a dozen items on the menu!) and we laughed and talked and just had a really fun time. When it came time to eat and her mom tried to excuse herself so we could all be "alone" again without a parent around, we made her stay (you'd have to know this girl and her mom as they are more like sisters and are 2 of the funniest and silliest and most entertaining people I've ever had the pleasure to know) so we ate and ate and ate some more and then watched the sun come up then changed clothes and headed for the beach for the next day and came back that night. It was definitely a Prom I won't remember...but not so much for the Prom itself but for afterwards.

 

(I really wanted to embarrass myself and include my Prom photo with this but my date that year now works for the DEA in Dade County, Florida and I'm not allowed to post any photos of him so I'm sorry you can't laugh at the fashions of the 80's with me -- it would have been back in 1986...ugh!)

Ours were always in the gym or the cafeteria.  I don’t think it mattered as much back in those days.  For me, they were such magical, special nights it wouldn’t have mattered where I was.  Seeing such familiar territory transformed by the prom commitee into a wonderland related to the theme (Magical Mystery Tour?  Up Up and Away?  Crimson and Clover?  Incense and Peppermint?  Some late '60s hit, no doubt) was part of the magic.  I had fun, and as far as I could tell, so did everyone else. 

 

I used to make my own gowns.  My big splurge was to get my hair put up in French curls (remember them?).  Not knowing what proms had turned into, I made my daughters' gowns too, but then I saw pictures of some of the other girls' dresses.  I asked my daughters if they felt deprived or out of place but they assured me they loved their gowns and didn't want store-bought ones.

 

I hear now many schools do proms in big fancy venues.  But this is the generation whose birthday parties cost thousands, right?  This is the generation whose older sisters and brothers are spending tens of thousands of dollars on their weddings. So I guess simple and homemade won't cut it any more.  Too bad.
