Q:
How do I make my shoes stop squeaking?
I'm wearing a pair of Borns Staleys. I love them, very comfy! The only problem is that they squeak on the floors at work. I'm guessing due to the cleaners/varnishes that they use here on the high traffic linoleum floors. Any suggestions......

A: Fix a Squeaky Shoe
Bought a pair of shoes for my holiday - perfect little white leather mules. Not wickedly expensive but more than I would usually pay but they fitted beautifully will go with almost everything I'll be wearing on holiday. In the shop it was not easy to identify that they squeaked but when I put them on at home I was shocked to hear how much they squeeked - never experienced anything like it before. Tried them on and off for a couple of days to see if the problem went away but it didn't. Decided I would take them back then a friend advised me to "google the problem" which resulted in me finding this site. Read all the comments which seemed to point one way ... hand lotion or oil. Felt very uneasy about trying either becauce tampering with the product takes you past the point of being able to return it. Finally got to the point where I thought 'I'll never know if I don't have a go' so took the plunge and rubbed copious amounts of hand lotion into them - inside and out (felt sick while doing so in case it didn't work). I cannot believe the difference! In fact I am gobsmacked (and it takes a lot for that to happen to me). Not a peep out of them and they look and feel fantastic. I am so thrilled and will be recommending both the tip and this site to everyone. Thank you so much. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By Raj. (Guest Post) (06/11/2007) I suffered for a 2 weeks! Now I'm a believer...a bit of hand lotion heals the squeaking of the evil shoe.

RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By cvp (Guest Post) (06/09/2007) well I tried lotion and am wearing the shoes now, to no avail. I know the area that is causing the problem is the top toe part of the shoe. I wish I could recall where I bought them I would bring them back. Funny I bought an identical pair of shoes a different color that have never squeaked. Those are the ones I tried on in the store. I have since learned to always try them on.

RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By Amanda (Guest Post) (05/15/2007) Try the lotion in every crevis of the shoe. I had a pair of pumps and tried it once and it didn't work. Then I really put alot of lotion in there and it worked. (Don't walk in them for a bit though) But you have to find that specific spot that is making them squeak.

RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By Cindy (Guest Post) (04/27/2007) The only thing I have here at work is hand lotion. Then I looked at inner sole lining and saw that it is glued in (I have a pair of peep-toe stacked heal Steve Maddens) and didn't want to start ripping it out. I saw some suggestions to just rub it into the inside of the shoe and not under the sole lining, but I wear these with bare feet and didn't want to feel the slippery lotion inside, so I tried just rubbing my bare feet with lotion and now the squeak is gone!

RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By becky (Guest Post) (04/26/2007) Just got some adorable leather ballet flats, but they squeaked and creaked like an old ship. I put a little gold bond healing lotion on the inside heel of one and tried walking. The dry one still sounded off, the lotioned one didn't make a peep. THANK YOU!

RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By (Guest Post) (04/18/2007) Came into work this morning, changed from my sensible walking shoes to new heels and immediately regretted it. The squeaking was awful! I have a meeting this afternoon so decided to try one of the tips mentioned in order to avoid embarassment in the boardroom. Hand cream rubbed into the indside of the shoes work a treat - and my feet will be lovely and smooth too! Excellent site - thanks.

The only oil I had at work was a can of spray olive oil. I took the orthodontics out and sprayed a little on the heel and put them back into the shoe and WALLA, no more squeaking. Thank you for the tips. Now I can walk without squeaking loudly.

RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By shoeless (Guest Post) (03/19/2007) I tried petroleum jelly and fell down the steps and broke my leg. Thanks alot to all who recommended that cool fix.
Editor's Note: I hope that this isn't true but if it is, I'm sorry you are hurt. The petroleum jelly does NOT go on the sole of the shoe.

RE: Fix a Squeaky Shoe Post By Maurice Camire (Guest Post) (02/24/2007) I just bought Clark shoes to accomodate my ankle-foot orthoses. I like the shoes and they're very comfortable. However, they squeaked mercilessly. So, I removed the insole, spayed the inner heel area with WD-40, put the insole back, put on the shoes with the ankle-foot orthoses and I walked with them on my feet. Amazingly, the squeaks have disappeared. You made my day!

A: Needs help
It probably needs a cleaning and lube of the gears, racks and rubber gaskets. The rubebr gaskets you can do yourself-- use a rag and some Windex(TM) to wipe off all the rubber gaskets, both on the window and around the roof edges. Then go buy some Silicone lube, the liquid kind. It may only be available in a spray can. Well, DONT spray it on the rubber, spray a lot of it on a rag (not paper), then wipe the rubber gaskets again with the rag. Operate the door partways so you can get at the hidden parts of the gasket. Get it all nice and slippery-- with luck the squeaking will go away and it will move smoothly.
If it still squeaks and stutters, the gears and racks will need lubing-- and these are usually harder to reach-- it may take a real service person to do this as they may have to drop the headliner to do it right.
