A: Satin is a smooth fabric, such as of silk or rayon, whereas Sateen is a strong cotton fabric in a satin weave.

"Satin" is a smooth fabric, such as of silk or rayon, woven with a glossy face and a dull back, whereas "Sateen" is a strong cotton fabric constructed in a satin weave and has a lustrous face. Sateen produces the sheen and softer feel through the use of a different structure in the weaving process. The sateen structure is four over, one under, placing the most threads on the surface, making it extremely soft, though slightly less durable than other weaves. Standard, non-sateen, weaves use a one over, one under structure. Satin also uses this structure, however, instead of using cotton, different materials are used, such as silk, polyester, etc.

A: depends...is your skirt to be wash and wear? or to be pressed/ironed?

most of the time quilting material is all cotton fabric and needs to be pressed with an iron after washing and drying. fabrics used for clothing usually contain polyester(which helps to keep fabric from wrinkling after washing and drying).

A: it depends not just on thread count but quality of the cotton as well

what ever weave you buy, sateen or not, buy a brand you trust for using quality fiber.
