A: The Pacific tectonic butted against the North American plate. Pressure caused the mountains to grow.
|
As the Pacific plate subducted under the North American plate, it caused pressure felt throughout the North American plate. It was being compressed by its own movement, and the Pacific plate. Over millions of years the pressure built up. It was released as rock strata cracked and moved on top of each other. As they pushed against each other, they pushed up and up.
It happened in 2 major pushes millions of years ago, lasting millions of years each. They caused the mountains from Alaska to New Mexico to grow. There are very accurate sensors on some mountain peaks that measure the continuing changes today. They are still growing in some places, very slowly.

A: Valentine’s Day in its present form is the memorial feast of Saint Valentine.

The popular customs associated with Saint Valentine's Day undoubtedly had their origin in a conventional belief generally received in England and France during the Middle Ages, that on 14 February, i.e. half way through the second month of the year, the birds began to pair.

For this reason the day was looked upon as specially consecrated to lovers and as a proper occasion for writing love letters and sending lovers' tokens. Both the French and English literatures of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries contain allusions to the practice. Perhaps the earliest to be found is in the 34th and 35th Ballades of the bilingual poet, John Gower, written in French; but Lydgate and Clauvowe supply other examples. Those who chose each other under these circumstances seem to have been called by each other their Valentines.

Saint Valentine is the Patron Saint of engaged couples, happy marriages, love, lovers and naturally enough, greeting card companies.
