Details:

I am looking for a good PDA. I don't want a "crackberry" or half phone half pda.
I need one for contact lists, notes, etc. Does not have to be on the very high end ...but no cheapo either.
Thanks

"As a college student who needed a PDA for to-do lists, scheduling, and contacts I chose the Palm Z22."

A few years ago, I was having a crisis in college known as burn out!  And this was due to me becoming overwhelmed by the amount of things I had to do and no real way of organizing it all.  I'm a tech-oriented guy and keeping written notes never worked for me.  I did a lot of research on my options, and found a very economical solution: the Palm Z22.

The Palm Z22 is like older cell phones: it was designed to be one device, not a substitute for many devices.  Because of this, you will find no mp3 player functionality, no camera, etc.  It is a PDA through and through.  And best of all, it runs on the ultra-stable Palm OS.  Why do you want a PDA that runs on Palm OS?  If you like free 3rd party software, or if you like to develop your own software for devices, Palm OS is heaven.  You will find literally thousands of free software to download for it that does basically anything you want (within reason).

Now, why the Z22 over other Palm PDAs?  Again, because it was created before the condense-all-gadgets-into-one phase of technology.  It was built to be a PDA and only a PDA.  But it does what it should, and in a very cost effective manner.  For as little as $90, you can get yourself one of these life organizers (I bought mine at newegg.com but you might be able to find a better deal elsewhere - just shop around).  It'll come stock with a calender, a to-do list, a contact manager, and even a couple games.  Not to mention all the other programs you'd find in standard Palm OS.  And if you can't find the program you're looking for, chances are it's available online and for free!

What's the bad?  There's no expandable memory card slot, but if you're really just using this for very basic uses, it'll have more than enough space (20MB).  And like all other Palm OS-driven devices, you cannot multitask.  Not a big deal if you're not going to be using it for anything too extreme.

Anyway, this was my first answer ever at Askville and I thought I'd give it a whirl.  The Palm Z22 was a crucial device in helping me not lose my mind in college and is now helping me organize my work life.

I hope this helps.

"Palm"

My first PDA was Handspring Visor Silver and I loved it.   Palm bought Handspring so my next PDA was a Palm Tungsten C (which has a built-in keyboard)--pricey but I wanted a keyboard. My husband has a Palm Zaire, which was only about $100 and does the most basic functions, which is all he cares about, and it's easy to get games for it.  It's a few years old but the link below seems to be a similar model.
I had heard that Palm wasn't going to use the Palm OS anymore, that they were moving to WinCE. But I can't tell if the link has WinCE or PalmOS. I am only familiar with PalmOS PDAs.

"I use a Palm Z22 and I love it."

I had the same need about two months ago.  I was hesitant to get a PDA because I was afraid I would not like being limited to the small screen, but for all of its benefits I got over that right away.

A professional organizer recommended the Z22 to me.  I can't say I comparison shopped because I was looking for her to eliminate that work for me.  Regardless, I love it.  No phone, no music, no extras, just great basic organization.  Phone listings, Calendars, planning, list making/maintenance - awesome.  Way better than the multiple messy paper lists I used to keep, some of which are still turning up around the house since I started with the Palm.

I was a grossly overcommitted "soccer mom" type this spring, and I don't think I would have made it through the end of the school year without my Palm.  Well, I guess I would have made it through, but I'm sure I would have blown a lot of commitments!!!!!

Hope that helps!
