The differences in area are presumably due to different answers to the questions of "Where exactly does one continent begin and the other end?" (re: Europe, Asia, and Africa, or North and South America), "Do islands count as part of the mainland's area?", "Do you count only the flat value, or do mountains include more area than plains?", and so on.
