The Beatles have my heart because they’re such a defining part of my generation, just as Elvis was such a defining part of the previous generation. Interestingly, both Elvis and the Beatles were offensive to the previous generation. They both represented a sort of rebellion to the older generation. Elvis and his hip swinging, sexy swagger and the "mop headed" Beatles, as they were referred to. Elvis had a voice that can’t be matched. Oh there are a lot of impersonators, but they’re just cheap imitations of the real deal. The Beatles, though, oh man, will anybody ever be able to write the number of great songs that Paul and John wrote. Songs that "dig" into the soul? Well that depends upon the mood. If your down, how about, "That’s where Your Heartaches Begin" or "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" If you’re my age and you’re watching the sunrise, the song that plays in your head is "Here Comes The Sun". (dootndodo) You can’t stop it, nor would you want to. I read about a female deejay, in Alaska, that played that song for the fishing men, every morning, whether the sun came up or not. Beatles songs pop into my head all of the time. I’m watching the news about the latest offense to society and I think, "Boy You’re Gonna Carry That Weight, a long time". Elvis had a major influence on the Beatles. John Lennon said,"If there hadn’t been Elvis, there would not have been The Beatles." When they formed the Quarry Men, they started doing Elvis’ songs, performed by John or Paul. They only met with Elvis once, as a group, and they had a spontaneous jam session. They never got together again, as a group, but they developed a sort of friendship that involved a mutual respect and admiration. Elvis was passed on to us from my Mother’s generation. He and Buddy Holley were the first grownups (I was eight) that I listened to. By the time that I was thirteen, The Beatles had arrived; Elvis, Buddy and even The Beach Boys took a back seat. Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away...Good memories...thanks

For me, Elvis Presley always impressed me for his golden voice - which remained remarkably intact, full and rich until the bitter end, despite the abuse he put his body through. His songs themselves, on the other hand, range from feel-good rockabilly, to touching ballads, to simply pedestrian pop music. Much of this, I think, has to do with the fact that like many performers of his era, he didn't actually compose the lion's share of the music that became popular for him. There are notable exceptions - Love Me Tender, Heartbreak Hotel and All Shook Up give him co-writing credits, but Return to Sender, Blue Suede Shoes, Burning Love, Jailhouse Rock, Are You Lonesome Tonight and so many others were the work of others. No big surprise then, that some of these songs live on and some sound frankly dated and stale.
The Beatles are another story. Lennon & McCartney are arguably the most prominent songwriters in the history of popular music, having pretty much changed the face of pop and rock as the world knows it today. What started as a charming, upbeat British Invasion band with infectiously catchy songs (Love Me Do, Please Please Me, etc.) evolved into something different entirely. Under the tutelage of and collaboration with George Martin, they integrated classical composition, complex harmony and other musical components previously unknown in popular music, and by exploring all sorts of new lyrical themes and topics (She's Leaving Home, Revolution, etc.) they created a new face for pop and rock music.
In today's parlance, it might be compared to a boy band like N-Sync or their ilk evolving to introduce a new popular fusion of jazz, classical and perhaps avant-garde music to the world.
So yes, I totally agree that the Beatles' songs bring so much more to the table than Elvis'.

Elvis has got to be my answer. I love the King. His voice just has something no one else’s has(in my opinion). I like how he can do just about any genre of music and make it sound amazing. I can always count on him for the different kinds of moods I’m in. He sings religous, patriotic, slow & sad, happy & joyous, festive, holiday songs, and just plain silly.
The Beatles are very good, but for me Elvis just takes my heart away every time I hear one of his songs. From Hound Dog to Viva Las Vegas to American Trilogy all the way to In the Ghetto he sings every type of music imaginable! When he makes his voice go really low, to me

The Beatles offer a much wider range of music, from tender love songs ("Here, There and Everywhere") to grooving rock tunes ("Day Tripper") to far-out psychedelia ("I Am the Walrus"). What's more, they wrote and performed the majority of their own music, music that features infectious melodies and gorgeous harmonies. They've played music that is largely solo as well as symphonic, they've dabbled in Eastern musical influences, and their subject music's subject matter is as diverse as the music itself.
Plus, is there any competing with a great Ringo tune? Not a chance!
"Don't pass me by, don't make me cry, don't make me blue…"

hands down with me. His looks, his voice, his charisma, his southern charm and politeness. I first heard him when I was 14 and he's still number one in my book!
Ok, its been 30 years since Elvis died yet the rumours persist that he's still alive. Anyone here who thinks he's still alive? Just remember, he'd be 72 if he were still alive! Somehow asking this just seems to be appropriate today.
Tell me how you qualify yourself. I'm a bit of a EP fanatic myself. Have been since way before the Beatles....to me he was (and still is) the best rock and roller of all time! Any of you agree?
