They are keeping up (barely) with technology, but are focused on their other services.

They are doing some technology things

In all likelihood, desktops will always be ahead of laptops as far as storage goes. It’s simply a matter of size and power: a desktop can have both in spades, but a laptop needs to be portable and cord-free. Dell, though, is stepping things up a notch by adding 250GB HDs to certain of its XPS M1710 laptops.

These make the first mass-produced commercial laptops in America with quarter-terabyte capacities, and exciting prospect for those of us who prefer mobility to desktop slavery. And as the full-on version of Windows Vista takes roughly 200GB for a full install, it’s good to have another 50GB to play around with. Sadly, the monster drives are only available in 5400RPM configurations, so if performance is your hot-button, you’ll wanna wait.

"Dell's XPS line is good overall, but you can get better values, item by item elsewhere, that's why."

Dell products are good, I currently have  2 desktops and 1 laptop.  The XPS line offers 'good' overall performance, but for the price many other companies offer the same components for less, and often offer a better base warranty.  www.cyberpowerpc.com is a good example of a company that offers the exact same components, with a 3 yr warranty.  Dell XPS line offers a water cooled system, but the 710 H2C STARTS at $5,500 loaded with Windows XP.  Final word is that Dell XPS line offers a good value and track record, but nothing really shines, and if you want anything extra you'll pay for it, including hundreds of dollars for any warranty over a year.  Value based on part for part, is the key. Hope this helps.
