Details:

The receiver does not have HDMI. Should I connect optical out on TV to optical in on receiver or optical out on DVD player to optical in on receiver. Which would be better? I am looking for best sound quality possible. TV is Samsung DLP HL-S6187W with 1080p, receiver Denon AVR 3803, and DVD player LG DN788 with upconverting to 1080i.

But looking at the rear panel of the Denon, you have 6 optical inputs, so why not connect both the TV and the DVD optical outputs to it?

.

Also, if there is a control benefit to it, you can run the component video  from the DVD to one of your two component video inputs on the Denon, and then the component video monitor output to the TV. I have seen several assertions from published AV experts that  there is no video signal difference between that and HDMI.

If it were me, I'd go straight from the DVD player to the receiver (Only because my DVD player and Receiver are right next to each other, for a shorter cable run), but either way should work just as well. Since they're both digital audio out, there shouldn't be sound degradation going through the TV first
